On-Site Service
A technician repairs the unit in place, without removing it from the facility.
Best when: the fault is accessible without full disassembly (e.g., seal replacement, alignment correction), and transporting the unit would add significant downtime or logistics cost.
Trade-off: not all failures can be fully diagnosed or repaired on-site — some require shop-level teardown and specialized test equipment.
OEM Rebuild
The unit is sent to a shop and rebuilt using original manufacturer parts, restoring it to original specification.
Best when: the gearmotor has significant wear across multiple components, and long-term reliability matters more than turnaround speed.
Trade-off: takes longer than on-site service or an exchange swap, since it typically involves full disassembly, part replacement, and testing.
Exchange Unit
A pre-tested, ready-to-install replacement unit is swapped in immediately, while the original is repaired separately (often for return to inventory as a future exchange unit).
Best when: minimizing downtime is the priority and a matching unit is available in inventory.
Trade-off: depends entirely on exchange stock availability for your specific model — worth confirming with your supplier which units they keep in exchange inventory before counting on this option for a critical asset.
Retrofit Upgrade
Rather than repairing to original specification, the unit is upgraded during the repair — for example, adding condition-monitoring sensors, upgrading to a higher-efficiency motor, or updating seals/materials for a harsher operating environment than the original spec assumed.
Best when: the repair is happening anyway, and the operating environment or requirements have changed since the unit was first installed.
Trade-off: adds cost and potentially lead time over a like-for-like repair, so it’s most worthwhile when the upgrade addresses a known recurring issue (e.g., repeated seal failures in a washdown environment) rather than being added speculatively.
Deciding Between Them

- How much does downtime cost per hour for this specific asset, and how does that compare to the cost difference between an exchange unit and a rebuild?
- Is a matching exchange unit actually available, or would waiting for one erase the speed advantage?
- Has anything about the operating environment or duty cycle changed since the original unit was installed, which a retrofit could address?
